There are five moving violations which are USDOT violations – not state violations. These violations carry 6 points each, and – more importantly – two of these violations in a two year period will result in suspension of your CDL for 60 days. Three of these violations in a three year period will result in a 120 day suspension of your CDL.
The violations are
- Excessive speeding ( more than 15 miles over the posted speed limit)
- Reckless driving
- Improper or erratic lane changes
- Following too closely
- A violation in connection with a fatal accident
If you are cited for any of these violations, please plan to challenge the citation and keep the court date. These violations – even in a passenger auto – apply for drivers who hold a CDL who are, therefore, held to a higher standard.
