Safety Blog: CDL Self-Certification Affidavit

CDL drivers have only until January 30, 2014 to self-certify with the motor vehicle department that issued their  CDL license.

Basically, you must go to the license bureau and sign and date a statement of the nature of your trucking service: there are 4 choices:

1. Category 1, non-excepted interstate – driving in interstate commerce in a position that requires a USDOT physical and other driver qualification requirements.
2. Category 2, exempted interstate – driving in interstate commerce in exempt transportation for which USDOT physical and other driver qualifications do not apply.
3. Non-exempted intrastate – driving intrastate only in a position that requires a USDOT physical and other driver qualification requirements.
4. Exempted intrastate – driving intrastate exclusively in exempted operations  which require USDOT physical and other driver qualification requirements.

Your correct answer is (1).  You operate in interstate commerce ( crossing state lines ) and must meet all USDOT qualifications requirements including a USDOT physical.

Intrastate commerce is performed exclusively within a single state.
